Cellulite and Fat Controversy
A great debate still rages about cellulite.
Does cellulite exist? Is so-called 'cellulite-fat' the same as ordinary
body fat? What causes it? How to treat it? Some doctors deny cellulite
exists, and but for many women cellulite is a real problem. Basically,
cellulite describes the dimpled or 'orange-peel' appearance of certain
areas of fat, especially on thighs. A high body fat percentage is not
necessary for the formation of cellulite as even lean people may suffer
from it.
Causes of Cellulite and Cellulite Fat
No one knows what causes cellulite. One
possible explanation - which also explains why very few men suffer from
cellulite - is based on the composition and behavior of women's fat cells
and the connective tissue that holds them in place. Very simply, a woman's
connective tissue is very inflexible, so as she gains weight and her fat
cells expand, they tend to bulge upwards towards the surface of the skin,
giving the classic orange-peel appearance of cellulite. In men, not only
is there generally less fat on the thighs, but also the outer skin is
thicker and thus obscures what is happening to any surplus fat below.
Cellulite Fat - How to Lose it
There are no easy ways to lose cellulite
fat. Even reducing fat in the normal way by eating less and exercising
more may not do the trick. Women with a relatively low body fat percentage
can still retain cellulite fat. However, anecdotal evidence suggests that
losing weight while maintaining a vigorous lower-body exercise routine
will definitely help, as dancers and runners rarely seem to suffer from
cellulite fat.
