Does Chromium assist Weight Loss?

According to a 3-month double-blind study of 122 moderately overweight people, chromium weight loss supplements offering 400 mcg of chromium daily resulted in an average loss of 6.2 pounds of body fat, as opposed to 3.4 pounds in the placebo group. There was no loss of lean body mass. These results suggest that chromium can help you lose fat without losing muscle.

Unfortunately, other studies show chromium weight loss supplements have no effect on weight loss. Six smaller double-blind placebo-controlled studies found chromium picolinate supplements produced no weight loss or change in lean body mass.

These conflicting results may be due to differences in study size, the dosage of chromium, and the individuals enrolled.

Chromium Picolinate Weight Loss Supplements

Some manufacturers of weight loss supplements claim that a synthetic chromium compound called chromium picolinate assists weight loss. But this claim is not proven.

Chromium Supplements - Bottom Line

Richard A. Anderson, lead scientist at the United States Department Of Agriculture's Beltsville Human Nutrition Research Center, has studied chromium supplements in many contexts over the last 20 years, and he's never seen the supplements change a person's body weight. In the journal Nutrition Reviews, he says:

"Chromium is only a small part of the puzzle in weight loss and body composition, and its effects, if present, will be small compared with those of exercise and a well-balanced diet."
