Do Energy Bars Build Muscle and Boost Energy?

No, energy bars are typically high-calorie foods that don't build muscle or boost energy more than any other food. So says a report in Tuft's University Health and Nutrition Letter. (July 2001).

So if you're looking for a quick, healthful snack, (especially if you're overweight or following a calorie-controlled diet) then reach for a small container of light yogurt or piece of fruit.

Energy bars were originally created for athletes, who need a quick source of energy during a long run, bike ride, hike or other endurance activity. "But marketers have sent energy bars into the mainstream," the report concludes. Casual gym-goers now snack on bars to supposedly help build muscle.

"Many people would be better served with a couple of oatmeal cookies or a small handful of nuts," says the report.
