Which is Better - Body Mass Index or Body
Fat Percent?
Body Fat Percentage vs. Body Mass Index
In Sept 2000, the American Journal of Clinical
Nutrition (AJCN) published a study showing that body-fat percentage may
be a more accurate predictor of the risk of weight-related diseases than
Body Mass Index (BMI).
BMI is only a rough measure of body fatness
among the general population. There are people - especially some highly
trained athletes - who are overweight without being overfat (obese). Likewise,
there are people who are of a normal weight according to BMI scales but
who are too fat. BMI is a broad, general measure of risk. Body-fat assessment
is much more specific to your actual fat content and thus provides a more
accurate indication of health risk.
