Weight gain occurs when a person consumes more calories than he or she burns. As well as taking IN an excess of calories, a lack of calories OUT is also one of the major causes of weight gain and obesity. Lack of physical exercise caused in part by watching too much TV, or playing too many computer games is strongly associated with obesity levels, especially in young people.

For example, a recent study finds that the amount of regular exercise girls get in their spare time drops by more than 80 percent between elementary school and late adolescence. Black teens reported a 100 percent falloff in regular physical exercise each week. Their white peers fared a little better, but even their exercise scores dropped by nearly two-thirds over the 10-year period.
