What Is Overweight?
Health experts define "overweight"
as an excess amount of body weight that includes muscle, bone, fat, and
water. By contrast, "obesity" specifically refers to an excess
amount of body fat.
Some people, such as bodybuilders or other
athletes with a lot of muscle, can be overweight without being obese.
Overweight is Related to Health
In simple terms, to be "overweight"
means that you have an increased risk (statistically speaking) of weight-related
health problems.
Overweight and Body Mass Index
The main indicator of whether you are underweight,
normal weight or overweight is the Body Mass Index (BMI). This gauges
your weight status by reference to your height and weight. If your BMI
is 25 or above, you are deemed to be overweight.
