Child Obesity EpidemicThere are some indications that legislators are beginning to take the childhood obesity epidemic seriously, especially as health care costs escalate. This fall in Texas, foods with minimal nutritional value will be banned from school cafeterias, hallways and common areas. Starting in 2004 in California, nutritional standards have been set for food sold in elementary schools - although legislators failed in a bid to phase out soft drinks. (Both the soft drink industry as well as the California Teachers Association opposed that portion of the bill, arguing that schools need the cash.) Some people, like Britain's Mayer Hillman, a researcher at London's Policy Studies Institute, say it's time to let children out of their bubbles. Over the past 30 years, children have been ferried about by parents for more and more activities, Mr. Hillman has argued. According to his research, 80 per cent of seven- and eight-year-olds were walking themselves to school in the early 1970s. That figure has since dwindled to less than one in 10. Most children own a bicycle, but few are allowed to use it as transportation. Children have become victims of their parents' paranoia. The result is a fitness time bomb that will explode in 20 or 30 years, he maintains. ----------------------------------------------------------- See: Source: The Ottawa Citizen, Thursday, February 06, 2003 Obesity and Weight Loss Short Articles About Obesity and Overweight
