In rare cases, children can become extremely obese because they lack the gene for leptin, a weight-regulating hormone. Now a new obesity and weight loss study suggests injections of the hormone can help such youngsters shed pounds without stunting their normal growth and development.

However, leptin is unlikely to be a useful weight-loss tool for people who are obese due to other reasons, according to Dr. I. Sadaf Farooqi of Addenbrooke's Hospital in Cambridge, England.

"Most people who are overweight or obese have plenty of leptin in their bodies and it is not clear whether giving them any more leptin would be of any benefit."
