Child Obesity & Weight Loss"Portion distortion" is part of the child obesity equation. With fast food restaurants "super-sizing" meals, it sometimes makes the price of buying a burger with three patties not much different than buying a burger with one. Meanwhile, the school system's role in derailing good eating habits is also under scrutiny. While many school cafeterias provide nutritional food choices such as soups, sandwiches, milk and fruit, soft drink and candy machines are also available to pile on the calories. Lynn Baird, a specialist in weight loss who works at The Haven on Robertson Road, a private wellness centre, says she's not an advocate of fad diets that restrict families too much - like the Atkins Diet that eliminates carbohydrates completely. But, she says, North Americans "need to get back to the basics." In their fight to eat low-fat, North Americans are replacing those foods with high sugar. "We have fat-free food now, and children go for low-fat options like rice cakes because they seem lighter, but they are high in sugar," says Ms. Baird. CHEO's Dr. Leblanc says prevention is the best approach, but if a child is already obese, it's best if the entire family offers support, modifying their lifestyle as well, rather than treating the child like the "fat kid" who has done something wrong. "I think this will take the pressure off the child, and nine times out of 10, the family needs to be more active anyway."
