Since being treated with leptin, the obese children have experienced a drop in LDL ("bad") cholesterol and an increase in HDL ("good") cholesterol. At the same time, treatment with leptin also lowered levels of insulin in the blood, which had been too high when the children were overweight.

Besides its apparent control over appetite and weight, leptin is thought to influence the body's ability to fight infections, according to Farooqi. Before treatment, two of the children showed signs of a weakened immune system, but immune function significantly improved after they began leptin injections. The role of leptin in the immune system suggests that the hormone may be important for immune disease such as HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, Farooqi said.
