Obesity, Fat & InsulinDr. Sorisky is also working with clients from a weight-loss program, comparing their pre-fat cells before and after weight loss. The early indications, he says, are that pre-fat cells are more disposed to becoming fat cells after a significant weight loss. He is not prone to exaggeration and, as tempting as it might be, will not say that an "anti-fat pill" is on the horizon or even on the agenda. One of the central areas of Dr. Sorisky's research is the relationship between insulin and obesity. Insulin is a hormone that regulates the level of sugar or glucose in the blood. In fat tissue, insulin helps the storage of glucose and its conversion to fatty acids. He is looking at how obesity is capable of producing a state of "insulin resistance," impairing the work of the hormone in muscle, the liver and the brain. "The one message (from research) that became clear is that fat or adipose tissue was not simply a place where one socked away a lot of excess calories. Beyond that, the fat tissue itself was making a whole elaborate array of important factors that are released by those fat cells and circulate through the body."
