Obesity Therapy & Leptin"This work shows that leptin is an important hormone and controls many different functions in the human body," Farooqi said. Although leptin therapy may not be the answer for most overweight and obese people, the UK researcher said that "this work does provide support for other research that is trying to understand why people become overweight or obese and how certain genes, and the molecules in the brain that they make, might regulate this." The next steps, Farooqi said, will be "to look at genes and molecules that act beyond leptin in the brain to control appetite and body weight." He suggested that "minor defects" in such genes could make some people prone to weight gain. "More research is needed to focus on the mechanisms underlying weight gain," he said, "so that we can actually begin to design rational treatments that may be applicable to the wider population."
