Obesity Treatment & LeptinSeveral years ago, Farooqi and his colleagues identified two obese children who lacked leptin due to a genetic mutation. Before being treated with leptin, the children, who were first-cousins, were severely obese. In a previous report on one of the children, the researchers described how one year of leptin injections had normalized the child's weight and appetite. Now, in an article in a recent issue of The Journal of Clinical Investigation, Farooqi's team reports on the progress of the original two obese children and another obese child with the same disorder after treatment with leptin injections for 10 to 50 months. The treatment has "reversed all of their problems," Farooqi told Reuters Health. The children have lost weight, mainly because they ate fewer calories. Although the children slimmed down, most of their weight loss came from fat, not lean muscle. In fact, the children's lean tissue increased at the normal childhood rate.
