Using over-the-counter weight loss supplements
and pills is becoming one of the most popular methods to lose weight.

According to a survey of almost 15,000
adults in five states, published in the August 22, 2001 issue of
the Journal of the American Medical Association, over-the-counter
weight loss pills were used by:
- More than 25 percent of young,
obese women
- 8 percent of women of normal weight.
In addition, more than 33 percent
of women and 10 percent of men who used prescription diet pills
also used over-the-counter weight loss supplements.

By comparison, the 1991/1992 Weight Loss Practices
Survey, sponsored by FDA and the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute,
found that 5 percent of women and 2 percent of men trying to lose weight
use diet pills.
