Acupuncture and Weight Loss
Acupuncture is the Chinese medical treatment
in which needles are inserted in the body along 'meridians' (channels
of energy). It is a recognized method of controlling pain, and is also
useful for many other conditions, including headaches and infections,
but its success in assisting weight loss or controlling body weight, is
less well documented.
Some people who undergo acupuncture do
lose weight, but this may be the result of stress reduction and thus weight
reduction through eating less. Some practitioners believe the needles
stimulate 'acupoints' that make the brain produce extra endorphins (the
'pleasure' hormones), which may reduce appetite or psychological need
for food.
