Our Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR)
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR), sometimes called
Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR), is the 'tick-over' speed of the body - the
rate at which it burns calories to keep its essential functions going,
like the heart beating, our lungs expanding and contracting, and our temperature
at the correct level. On average, BMR uses about 60 percent of our calorie-intake.
BMR is genetically inherited and varies from person to person. Those people
with a lower BMR are more at risk of becoming overweight than those with
a higher BMR. To find out how BMR is affected by diet and exercise, click
