Are Bread and Potatoes Fattening?

High protein, low-carb diets are high fashion, especially in America. In fact, some Americans are actually frightened of eating carbs.

So are bread and potatoes really fattening? Answer: No.

The truth is, starchy carbs like bread and potatoes are not at all fattening or bad for weight loss. There are very very few people who are overweight or obese because they have eaten too many slices of bread, or too many potatoes. Why not? Because these starchy foods fill up our stomach long before we eat too many calories.

They do become fattening, though, when we start adding fat to them: frying potatoes as fries or spreading butter on the bread. Then the calorie count goes right up.

Fact: Americans consume 25 percent of their vegetables in the form of french fries!!
