Do-it-Yourself calorie-counting will work to produce weight loss if the calorie level chosen is sufficient to create an energy deficit. And a calorie controlled diet can be followed indefinitely. Also, because of the variety of foods allowed, such a diet may be easier to follow long-term than many other diets.

However, the necessary weighing and measuring is a chore which often causes people to 'slip'. A lot of weighing and measuring of foods involved in order to stay within calorie limit. So while it's a very flexible type of weight loss plan, it's not always practical or convenient.
