Calories and Weight Control - Some Comparisons
If you want to lose weight you don't have
to eat less. But you do need to choose lower-calorie options and avoid
calorie-dense foods. Here are some interesting calorie comparisons.
- 2 teaspoons of sugar contain as many
calories as 4 oz (100g) of green peas. Does a cup of tea with two sugars
'fill you up' in the way a quarter of a pound of peas would help to?
No.
- 1 oz (25g) of butter (which is almost
pure fat) contains more calories than 10 oz (275g) of potatoes (which
are mostly digestible carbohydrates bulked out with fiber and water).
Now 10 oz (275g) of potatoes is really quite a large helping. But an
ounce of butter could be eaten in an instant, melted on half a potato,
without even batting an eyelid.
- 10 lb (4.5kg) of apples contain fewer
calories than 1 lb (450g) of candy. So you could eat a whole pound of
apples for the same number of calories as a couple of candies. The reason
is that candy packs a huge punch of fat and sugar into a small space.
Could you eat much else after a pound of apples? A couple of candies
could be gone in a blink!
