Herbal Supplements for Cellulite TreatmentHerbal supplements sold as aids to cellulite reduction often contain a similar range of plant extracts, frequently including bladderwrack (for thyroid function/fluid retention), gingko biloba (said to stimulate circulation), horse chestnut and grapeseed extract. The sellers claim that these supplements help circulation and fluid drainage, stimulate metabolism and reduce localized fats - without the need to diet or exercise. (There are also herbal patches on sale that are said to work in a similar way.) However, these 'cellulite supplements' should be treated with care. In one well-known case in 2000, the US Federal Trade Commission charged the importers of the most popular brand, Cellasene, with making false claims for the product. And in November 1999 British research was published in the Journal of Psychotherapy in which neither woman who tried a placebo pill nor women on Cellasene noticed any improvement in their cellulite. Some supplements contain high levels of iodine, which could be dangerous. See also: Cellulite
