Dietary Fat Makes Us OverweightDietary fat is a major culprit in making us overweight. On average, we get about 40 percent of our calories from fat. That seems impossible, but it's not just the fat you can see that causes weight gain, but also the invisible fat that is pre-added to foods. Cakes and cookies, for example, which we think of as sweet things, in fact usually stock us with far more calories from the fat in them than from the sugar. Candy is 33 percent fat and so is Cheddar cheese. Roast shoulder of lamb can be 25 percent fat and even lean grilled rump steak still contains some fat. Remember that, weight-for-weight, pure fat contains twice as many calories as pure protein or pure carbs. But the big problem is not so much the 'pure' fat we can identify and cut out - like the fat of butter - but the fat bound up with other foods (such as with protein in cheese and with carbs in cakes and pastries). For example, mayonnaise is 80 percent fat. Bottom line: if you want to reduce calories and lose weight, go easy on fat. Aerobic
