Does Exercise Reduce Weight?
Yes, exercise is fantastic for weight reduction,
not simply because it burns extra calories but also because of the effect
it has on our body's tick-over speed or basal metabolic rate (BMR). Going
on any diet tends to reduce our BMR - our rate of burning up calories
while the body is 'at rest'- by a little. Regular exercise counters this
effect and so enables us to burn up calories more efficiently - not just
when we are exercising, but during the rest of the time too, when we're
sitting watching television, for example! It also tends to increase our
body's ability to burn up any excess calories (by thermogenesis).
Bottom line: It's much easier to reduce
weight when we add regular exercise to our daily diet routine.
