Sources of Fat in Your Diet
If you want to lose weight and reduce your
excess body fat, it's a good idea to reduce your intake of dietary fat.
Here's a rough summary of where the fat in your diet comes from.
- 25 percent of fat comes from meat
and meat products
This is not just fat we can see on things like chops, but the hidden
fat in things like sausages, pies, pates and salami. Up to two-thirds
of the calories in something like a meat pie may come from fat.
- 21 percent of fat comes from butter
and margarines
Remember that even margarines labeled 'high in polyunsaturates' like
sunflower margarine contain just as many calories as butter.
- 14 percent of fat comes from cooking
oils and fats
It's possible to eliminate almost entirely this source of fat - and
without too much pain!
- 11 percent of fat comes from milk
On average we drink quite a lot of milk, and, so, although whole milk
only contains 4 per cent fat, the total amount of fat we consume from
milk may be significant. Drinking half a pint - 10 fl oz (300ml) of
milk a day is the equivalent of drinking a pint (600ml) of single cream
a week! Moral? Choose fat-free milk.
- 7 percent of fat comes from cookies,
cakes and pastries
You don't need to stretch your imagination to know how to eliminate
this source of fat when you want to lose weight!
- 7 percent of fat comes from cream
and cheese
- 15 percent of fat comes from other
foods
