Overeaters AnonymousOvereaters Anonymous (OA) is an international non-profit fellowship started back in 1960, in California, when three people got together to try and help each other with their eating problems and followed the pattern of '12 steps to recovery' based on the Alcoholics Anonymous program. OA now has 7,500 meetings worldwide and there is no membership fee - the only requirement for membership is a desire to stop compulsive eating. All members retain their anonymity, with first names only being used. A Gallup poll survey found that their average member is a 44 year old woman who has lost 40 pounds and has found that her emotional and mental health has improved since joining OA. No dietary advice is offered, but the organization recommends that members develop their own 'plan of eating', perhaps with the help of a dietician. Aerobic
