Sugar Intake in DietMany of us eat more sugar than we could possibly imagine. This is one reason why so many of us are overweight or obese. For example, in the UK an average of nearly 2 pounds of sugar is eaten per person each week. Typically, only half of the amount eaten is actually added by us to food - stirred into coffee or tea, sprinkled on cornflakes. The other half is added for us by food manufacturers. An average can of soda contains about 10 teaspoonfuls of sugar! That's as many calories, remember as in 1 and 1/4 pounds of green peas. Sugar is all over the place: it's added to savory sauces, soups, baked beans, tinned vegetables and all manner of savory things. It's even added to many breakfast cereals which try to promote a 'healthy image'. You may now be beginning to see how our diet averages 400-500 calories a day from sugar. Those are calories we can do without. For other mini-articles about diet, weight loss and sugar, see: Sugar
