Thermogenesis, Calories and Weight
Thermogenesis is the body's ability to
burn off excess calories as heat. Thermogenesis is inherited and varies
from person to person. We don't know everything about this process but
thermogenesis occurs partly in response to eating food and its rate may
depend on the type of food eaten. On average, thermogenesis accounts for
about 10 percent of calories burned.
There's evidence that calories are burned
up more slowly on a high-fat diet. Evidence also indicates that diet-induced
thermogenesis may be increased by taking exercise. This is in addition
to both the higher BMR induced by exercise and to the calories the exercise
itself burns off.
