Obesity and Overweight in Asia & PakistanObesity is the most important public health challenge faced by Asian countries and Pakistan is no exception, said Professor Dr Nighat Bilal, of the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS). In a lecture on obesity in Islamabad, Dr Bilal said obesity and overweight had directly contributed to the spread of diabetes and that more than 57 percent of diabetics are overweight. She explained a modest weight loss of 5-10 percent had been shown to reduce the risk of diabetes by 58 percent. Moderate weight loss can also reduce blood pressure and cholesterol level. She said weight reduction is difficult, but the majority of people who attempt to lose weight by dieting eventually regain their lost weight. She said that Asia had been at the forefront of the Type 2 diabetes epidemic, which was now spreading all over the world. By 2010, there would be an estimated 130 million people afflicted with Type 2 diabetes. Globally, there are more than one billion adults who are overweight and at least 300 million who are clinically obese. "Being overweight and the negative
consequences of being obese are so common that they surpass traditional
public health concerns such as malnutrition and infectious diseases,"
she added. Aerobic
