Overweight Kids & Lack of SportLess Exercise Leads to OverweightMeanwhile, the demands of the national curriculum have resulted in a squeeze on sport - many children are lucky if they get an hour of games a week. This has not been helped by the continuing disposal of school playing-fields, resulting in precious time being wasted as pupils are bussed to the nearest patch of green for a football lesson or hockey training. Combine that with the pressure of exams, and it is no surprise that many opt to swot rather than tear around a rugby pitch. Obesity is just the tip of the inactivity iceberg however; lack of exercise can lead to a number of other serious problems which may not show themselves until later life, from diabetes and heart disease to asthma and cancer. Being sedentary can also lead to poor spinal development (from slouching in front of a screen) and even osteoporosis. It may seem obvious that children need to run around a lot, but a recent MORI poll, commissioned by the British Heart Foundation and Stroke Association, found that 18 per cent of parents never encourage their children to take any exercise and 49 per cent said that study was a higher priority than getting exercise.
