Almost Half Of NYC Schoolkids Are OverweightForty-three percent of children enrolled in kindergarten through fifth grade in New York City's public schools are overweight or obese, according to a survey released Tuesday. These weight results arrive less than a month after education officials announced that cafeterias in public schools would start following stricter nutritional guidelines this fall and that certain snacks - such as cakes and doughnuts - will no longer be sold in school vending machines. The overweight and obesity survey, which involved nearly 3,000 children, found that 19 percent of schoolchildren were overweight, while 24 percent were obese. Nationally, 15 percent of children ages 6 to 11 were estimated to be obese in 2000, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
