Insomnia, Weight Loss and Weight Gain

Studies in the Journal of the American Medical Association and The Lancet indicate poor sleep might boost hunger and affect the body's metabolism and the ability to lose weight or maintain weight loss.

"For years we've known that obesity causes sleep disorder breathing problems," says Ingmundson, a clinical professor at the University of Texas Health Science Center. "Now in the past two or three years, there's more data that suggests the causal arrows point both ways. Sleep loss itself causes weight gain. People develop increased cortisol, the stress hormone, and increased insulin resistance, which is called a prediabetic condition. That makes it harder to lose weight."
