Bingeing on Sugary Foods

Falling off your weight loss diet and bingeing on sugary or highly refined foods may trigger low blood sugar. It is quite common for dieters to get a physical/psychological urge for something sweet to eat, especially during strict diets as just outlined. This may be more apparent in women before a period, or even when people are under stress and extra stress hormones can affect insulin production and blood sugar levels.

For example, you are trying extra-hard to follow your diet and have accidentally eaten too little. As a result, your blood-sugar level is dropping. Suddenly, you feel an uncontrollable urge for something sweet. You give in, eating a chocolate bar or two, a bag of sweets or several cookies. You carry on eating, in fact, until you feel satisfied. As a result your blood sugar levels rise quickly as the sugar in most of these refined products is quickly absorbed into the bloodstream. Your pancreas then goes into 'panic mode' and releases a huge amount of insulin to cope with sudden influx of sugar. Within an hour or more, the insulin has done its job only too well. It has neutralised all the sugar your blood-sugar is low again. This may cause you to eat yet more sweet food - and the cycle begins again.
