All food or drink 'surplus to requirements' (whether carbs, protein or fat) converts to fat in your body, causing you to gain weight - but dietary fat is particularly efficient at doing so. By comparison, about 20 percent of carb energy is burned up in this conversion to body fat. At 9 calories a gram (about 50 calories per teaspoon), fats and oils are the highest-calorie food you can eat.
