Diet for Diabetics

Diabetics may have kidney problems, so drink enough water to help them work well (but not too much, which can overtax the kidneys - about 6 glasses of water a day will be good in normal circumstances). Also, avoid high protein low-carb diets as these may strain the kidneys.

Diabetics may be more prone to infections, so get plenty of fresh fruit salads and vegetables in your diet for the antioxidant carotenes and vitamin C, which help protect you. Get the antioxidant zinc from foods such as nuts, seeds, and lean red meat, and get vitamin E, another antioxidant important for diabetics, from nuts, seeds and plant oils.
Research shows that a diet rich in oily fish, nuts, seeds and plant oils may help to regulate the blood sugar levels.

Don't be tempted to try dieting too quickly - aim for a weekly weight loss of no more than half a pound after the first week of dieting, which should be possible by reducing your daily calorie intake by only 250 calories or so. If you try to reduce your calories down too low, you may create problems in maintaining even blood-sugar levels.

Diabetics should always discuss diet with their doctor and not follow any new diet without their knowledge.
