Do Men Suffer From Eating Disorders?

Yes, men do suffer from a variety of eating disorders. The number of men contacting eating disorders helplines is increasing. It is now thought that about 10 percent of anorexics and bulimics are male, but as people still think of these as 'female' eating disorders it apparently takes twice as long to diagnose a male sufferer.

Although many of the 'triggers' that can cause eating disorders in females may also be present in males, there are also male-specific triggers. One is being bullied, another is being teased for being overweight. Men are also more prone to over-exercising and bodybuilding, which may accompany or predate an eating disorder. Such men are often described as having 'machismo nervosa', although this isn't an official term.
