What is 'Low Blood Sugar' - Why do Dieters Often Get it?

Low blood sugar (aka hypoglycemia) is a condition that can arise for various reasons. Its symptoms may include feeling dizzy, weak, palpitations, hand tremor, lethargy/fatigue, irritability, feeling 'spaced out' and perhaps hungry.

Blood-sugar levels are influenced mainly by food intake- and by insulin, which is released by the pancreas to convert the sugar to fuel or to help convert it to fat for later use. Once the insulin has done its job, blood-sugar levels should be normal, but this isn't always the case. Hypoglycaemia can occur in diabetes when the diabetic doesn't match their food intake with their insulin levels; this can be a serious condition and is relieved by immediate intake of glucose or sugary food.

In non-diabetics, hypoglycaemia can occur frequently or occasionally, mildly or more strongly, depending upon the individual, their diet and the circumstances. Here are the usual reasons that you may experience low blood sugar when you are dieting:

Fasting/Fast Type Diet
Low Calorie Intake
Bingeing on Sugary Foods
Too Much Exercise; Not Enough Calories
