Are Very Low Calorie Diets Healthy?

Very-low-calorie diets (VLCD) do provide valuable weight loss benefits, but this type of calorie-reduced weight loss plan is really designed for severely obese individuals and should be followed only under medical supervision.

Obese people with life-threatening conditions (or sometimes before an operation) may be put on a monitored VLCD diet to get their weight down and thus reduce the risk of early death or problems during anesthesia or surgery. It is often a 'last resort', when attempts to get the patient to lose weight on a normal calorie-controlled diet have failed. Obesity specialists recognize this as a valid and useful way to reduce weight in these patients, and the World Health Organization says VLCD's should be reserved for rapid weight loss on medical grounds in patients with a BMI over 30.
