The Mediterranean diet is not a specific weight loss diet plan or diet program. Rather, it's a collection of eating habits that are traditionally followed by the people of the Mediterranean region. The diet has attracted interest due to the traditionally lower rates of diet-related disease (e.g. heart disease and cancer) within the region.

What You Eat on The Mediterranean Diet

Although not a specific weight loss diet, the Mediterranean diet style is very healthy. The diet promotes eating that is low in saturated fat and rich in monounsaturated fat which is better for our overall health. Emphasis on food from plant sources, including fruits and vegetables, potatoes, breads and grains, beans, nuts, and seeds. Limited amounts of fish, poultry and red meat. Moderate amounts of wine. Olive oil (rich in monounsaturates) as the principal fat. Almost no butter, margarine, or other fats.

How The Mediterranean Diet Helps You Lose Weight

Any diet that emphasizes fruit, healthy oils, vegetables and carbs is healthy. As with any other diet, calorie and portion control is still important if you want to lose weight.

Almost all diet programs help us lose weight and teach us something about healthy weight loss. There's no such thing as an ideal weight loss diet. But ideally, follow a balanced diet, set realistic weight loss goals and set aside enough time for aerobic exercise.
