Fenfluramine Weight Loss Drugs
Fenfluramine (the fen of fen/phen) and
dexfenfluramine (Redux) were designed to suppress appetite and assist
weight loss mainly by increasing cell-release of serotonin, an important
brain-chemical. Unfortunately, both fenfluramine and dexfenfluramine were
withdrawn from the market in Sept 1997 because of the association of these
two weight loss drugs with pulmonary hypertension (a rare but serious
disease of the arteries in the lungs), and association of fen/phen with
damage to the heart valves.
