Obesity - Child Surveys
A survey of 2994 children aged 4 to 12
years in Gibraltar found that the prevalence of obesity increased from
9.1% of 4 year old girls to 29.3% of 11 year old girls and from 3.4% of
4 year old boys to 33.5% of 11 year old boys. The high level of obesity,
especially amongst 11 year olds, may be due to a number of reasons; but
over-reliance on fast food, extreme traffic congestion hence poor facilities
for bicycles and rollerblades, and long lunch breaks with grandparents
no doubt play a role- resulting in weight gain.
Obesity Survey Taipei
A survey of 1045 children aged 9 to 12 years in Taipei indicated that
20.6% of boys and 11.2% of girls are obese. The children reported having
very inactive lifestyles, with lack of time, a companion, and space being
the main reasons for not getting enough exercise. Obesity was much higher
amongst boys than girls, which may be influenced by the fact that boys
prefer protein -rich foods, while girls prefer fruit.
