Sibutramine & Leptin - Future Obesity Treatment?
Weight Loss Study
A recent weight loss study, examined the combined use of leptin, a recently
discovered hormone that is involved in the regulation of food intake,
and sibutramine (Meridia ®), an appetite suppressant. When obese rats
were given sibutramine in conjunction with small doses of leptin, to prevent
the normal decline in circulating leptin that occurs with weight loss,
their food intake was lower and their loss of body fat was greater than
rats treated with sibutramine alone. This suggests that a reduction in
leptin is part of the reason for the "weight plateau" that many
people experience while trying to lose weight.
Weight Loss Study Conclusion
The weight loss study suggests new potential approaches for the future
use of leptin in treating obesity. However, additional studies are needed
to determine whether the synergistic effects of leptin and sibutramine
observed in rats also occurs in obese humans.
