Weight Loss Diet Trials -UK
Being overweight and obese is one of the
major risk factors for developing coronary heart disease (CHD). In response
to increasing reports on obesity and weight gain in the UK, 'Diet Trials'
(in conjunction with the British Heart Foundation & BBC) reviewed
the UK's most popular diets through a scientific and independent study
led by the University of Surrey.
During 'Diet Trials', Weight Watchers Pure
Points Program, Rosemary Conley's Eat Yourself Slim Diet and Fitness Plan,
Dr Atkins' New Diet Revolution and Slimfast Plan were put to the test
over a six month period. Reactions of 300 dieters to the weight loss programs
were assessed. The results were published in a book Diet Trials by Lyndel
Costain, 2003.
Currently an estimated 45% of men and 34%
of women in the UK are overweight, and an additional 20% of men and 19%
of women are obese. Around 5% of deaths from CHD in men and 6% of deaths
from CHD in women are thought to be due to obesity.
