Weight Loss Medication & Behavior Modification
Weight Loss Medication Study Summary
Patients who combined behavior modification with weight loss medication
lost more weight and were more satisfied with the results, according to
a recent weight loss study.
Weight Loss Medication Study Method
The study compared weight loss of 55 women randomly assigned to three
groups: those in the first group were prescribed sibutramine, but received
no behavioral counseling; the second group received sibutramine and participated
in behavior modification sessions; the third group were given sibutramine,
behavior modification sessions and a liquid formula diet to help control
meal portion size.
Weight Loss Medication Study Results
After six months, the study showed that the combination of sibutramine
with behavior modification sessions and liquid formula diet was most effective,
with those patients reducing their weight by 17.1 percent. Patients who
used sibutramine with behavior modification lost 11.5 percent of their
body weight, while those who used medication alone decreased their weight
by 5.2 percent.
Weight Loss Medication Study Conclusion
The research underscores the importance of behavior modification and lifestyle
changes in managing obesity. Taking weight loss medication alone for obesity,
without the hard work of trying to change lifestyle, exposes patients
to all of the costs and side-effects of the medication without the full
weight loss benefit.
