Weight Loss Drug Studies
Despite billions spent on herbal or "natural" weight loss remedies
each year in the U.S., many studies found a lack of clinical data to support
weight loss claims made by several compounds widely available in the U.S.
and sold under a variety of brand names.
One found that chitosan, a dietary fiber
that has been purported to reduce intestinal fat absorption, had no effect
on fat absorption at all.
Weight Loss Supplements & FDA Approval
Herbal therapies and dietary supplements for weight loss and obesity do
not require approval by the Food & Drug Administration for safety
and efficacy as do pharmaceutical products. As a result, many weight loss
claims made by companies that produce these compounds are not supported
by carefully performed long-term clinical trials. Consumers should be
cautious when considering these products and review effectiveness and
safety issues with their physician.
