Weight Loss Surgery Results
Weight Loss Surgery & Weight Loss
Weight Loss surgery is the most effective treatment for patients with
severe obesity, according to the North American Association for the Study
of Obesity (NAASO). When performed by experienced surgeons on appropriately
selected patients, surgery is an effective method for weight loss and
treating the medical complications of obesity. Moreover, recent data demonstrate
that surgery can even prevent the onset of diabetes, high blood pressure
and other life-threatening disorders in these patients.
Weight Loss Surgery & BMI
In another development, weight loss surgery is also becoming an appropriate
procedure for a wider range of patients. Previously, only patients with
the most severe degree of obesity, those with a body-mass index (BMI)
of at least 40 (equivalent to being 100 lbs. or more overweight), were
generally considered eligible for surgery. Now, new data from the influential
SOS (Swedish Obese Subjects) Study suggest that even obese patients with
BMIs below 40 who have failed other forms of treatment can benefit from
surgery.
According to Dr. Ingmar Naslund, from Goteborg,
Sweden, patients with BMIs below 40 benefited from surgery just as much
as those with BMIs over 40, and did much better than such patients tested
non-surgically.
