Studies by the US National Center for Toxicological Research, approaching the subject from the reverse angle, have indicated that people who cut the calorie intake in their diet down to a maximum of 1,800 calories a day show large improvements in the biochemistry of their cells, and similar tests on animals have shown that they can increase their lifespan by 50 percent, although this work needs to be investigated further.
