Why Does Overweight Increase the Risk of Heart Disease?Until recently, overweight was believed to increase the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD - or coronary arterial disease), as well as other cardiovascular diseases, including stroke, because it triggered other cardiovascular risk factors, like high blood pressure (hypertension), raised total cholesterol or impaired glucose tolerance and diabetes. Now obesity is believed to be an 'independent' risk factor - meaning that, even if you had none of the health problems listed above, it could still increase your risk of cardiovascular disease and premature death.
