Low Fat Weight Loss Diet & Physical
Activity
Low Fat Diet Study Aim
To test the effectiveness of environmental and policy interventions on
physical activity and fat intake (via low fat food choices) of middle
school students at school.
Low Fat Weight Loss Diet Study Methods
Twenty-four middle schools in San Diego County, California were randomized
into an intervention or control group. Over a two-year period, several
interventions were implemented that were aimed at increasing opportunities
for physical activity and for low-fat food choices.
Low Fat Weight Loss Diet Study Results
Results showed significant increases in physical activity for the overall
group (boys and girls) and for boys. No significant increases in physical
activity were seen for girls. In addition, there were no significant effects
on total fat or saturated fat intake. The authors conclude that environmental
and policy interventions have the potential to positively affect health
behaviors at school, but more research is needed to improve implementation
of these interventions.
