Obesity & Fast Food Report
Weight Gain - Fast Food
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce issued the results of a report (2003), arguing
that fast food restaurants shouldn't be held responsible for people gaining
weight in the United States. The report pointed to cheaper food prices
and a more sedentary workforce as major reasons for the rise in obesity
and overweight among Americans, and said there's a misperception that
Americans have suddenly started gaining weight. In fact, the report states,
Americans have been steadily gaining weight for much of the last century.
Obesity - Fast Food
The report argues that fast food shouldn't be singled out for abuse, as
these meals derive fewer calories from fat today than they did in the
1970s. The Center for Science in the Public Interest says " to say
that fast food has absolutely nothing to do with obesity is pretty incredible,
even for the credibility-challenged Chamber of Commerce. The reactionary
report released today by the Chamber might as well have been released
by the Flat Earth Society, for it totally ignores the role of fast food
in diets, particularly children's diets."
Are we to believe that the aggressive marketing
of high-fat, high-sugar, high-cholesterol food items to children hasn't
had some effect on the childhood obesity problem?
