Obesity & Food Commercials
Overweight Australian Children
In light of increasing childhood obesity, the Australian Government has
warned the producers of food commercials they will be hit with tougher
laws unless they act more responsibly. There are more than one million
overweight children in Australia, and advertisers must acknowledge their
commercials have enormous influence over children's eating habits and
excessive weight gain.
High Calorie Food Commercials
The Australian Divisions of General Practice, which has for some time
called on advertisers to voluntarily restrict their commercials during
children's television hours, said 99 percent of such commercials are for
food with little nutritional value, high calories and fat, including candies,
soda drinks and take-away foods.
The Australian Society for the Study of
Obesity also praised the government's move, saying that industry self-regulation
has patently not worked.
