Obesity & Weight Loss Facts
Obesity involves the interaction between
genetic and environmental issues, but we don't really know now what the
dominant factor is.
Overweight Children
A 1999 survey by the Monroe County Health Department found that 23 percent
of African-American children ages 10 to 14 were at risk for being overweight
or were overweight, compared with 15 percent of white children of the
same age group. Nationally, by age 19, more than half of black females
were overweight, compared with a third of white females.
Overweight & Physical Activity
Americans - old, young and in-between - are less active and more overweight
than past generations. According to a 1996 U.S. Surgeon General's report
on physical activity and health, more than 60 percent of Americans do
not get enough physical activity to provide health benefits or weight
loss, and nearly half of 12- to 21-year-olds do not regularly engage in
vigorous physical activity. Cycling or walking trips have declined by
more than 40 percent since 1977.
